My 6+ years with Gary McHale…

THE END OF THE BEGINNING! After 4 arrests & a 31 month campaign Canadians force OPP to respect their right to raise a Canadian flag in Caledonia.

In early 2007 after we were arrested together on Dec 16/06 while trying to raise a Canadian flag opposite the occupation site; during a time when former OPP Commissioner and the OPPA and the media were printing the most vile accusations against him and his followers; and knowing that York Regional Police had been in his home to respond to threats against Gary and his wife Christine from occupation militants; and knowing just how politically-incorrect our mission to end race-based policing was, I said to Gary:

“If, when this struggle is over,  we’re still alive and not in jail, everything else will be a bonus, but no one is going to be pinning any medals on us.”

I’m so glad I was wrong — about the medal. Six Nations militants did try to kill Gary on Dec 02/07 when occupation ringleader Clyde Powless jumped on his back and other cowards joined in, kicking him and screaming obscenitie while he lay on the ground. Fortunately, a quick thinking Doug Fleming tackled Powless and some badly outnumbered OPP officers hustled Gary out of the area. Despite being viciously assaulted Gary never once raised an angry voice or fist in retaliation.

For more six years I have had the honour (and, yes, the frustration sometimes), of working beside a stubborn, determined man who refused – and refuses – to give up until this province and its police force end racial policing and, once again, respect the rule of law.

Freedom Party of Ontario bestows ‘Free Speech Award’ on Mary Lou Ambrogio; praises Caledonia activists

During the day I was one of two non-native activists arrested for ‘breaching the peace’ as I was being assaulted by one of the occupiers on the Douglas Creek Estates in Caledonia.

In the evening, I was honoured to be a guest speaker and presenter at the post-election dinner meeting for the Freedom Party of Ontario where executive members Bob Metz, Robert Vaughan, and leader Paul McKeever explained why the NDP, Liberals and Hudak PCs are all nearly-identical ‘red’ parties more interested in promoting ‘wealth distribution’ than in promoting wealth creation and protecting liberty.

Freedom Party of Ontario – honouring a great friend of Caledonia, Canada, liberty and democracy

Following Paul McKeever’s very thought-provoking speech about the red parties vs. liberty I gave a short talk to help honour an amazing activist named Mary Lou Ambrogio, VP of the Canadian chapter of the International Free Press Society (seen above as evening emcee for my inaugural 2012 Israel Truth Week Conference), and presented her, on behalf of the Freedom Party of Ontario, the party’s ‘Free Speech Award’ in recognition of her tireless work in giving a voice to artists, authors, politicians and advocates who have been faced persecution by those who fear the light shone on their lies and/or crimes.

VoiceofCanada editor Mark Vandermaas was called to the stage at the National Holocaust Remembrance Day ceremony to be part of the candle-lighting ceremony in honour of the ‘Zachor Coalition’ — the group of organizations who contributed to the event’s success.

In the audience were 45 people who had travelled with Mark via a bus sponsored by the Canadian Society for Yad Vashem including, Caledonia activists Gary & Christine McHale as well as Merlyn Kinrade and his daughter Olivia, along with Al Gretzky from the International Free Press Society; Steve Scheffer from Hamilton’s Never Again group, and Rabbi Jonathan Hausman who flew up from Boston to ride the bus with his ‘Favourite Gentile.’

At his March 21/12 Israel Truth Week Conference in London, which was held at Royal View Church (where Caledonia activist Gary McHale’s message to Christians about the evils of racism – especially anti-Semitism - and about the necessity of paying a price for their beliefs was very well received), Mark announced that the Canadian Society for Yad Vashem had offered to provide a bus to take people to Ottawa for the ceremony. Dr. Peter Marshall of the Victory International Church in Hamilton enthusiastically supported the trip and approximately half the bus’s 46 passengers were members of his 1,000-strong congregation.

Why Caledonia still matters, even six years after the Douglas Creek Estates were occupied, is not what happened that day or in the months that followed. It’s more than the beating of Sam Gualtieri, or the destruction of a hydro transformer. No it’s the response of the authorities, or more correctly the lack thereof. Crime happens, that’s an unavoidable part of life. That’s why we have a justice system. When basic laws are not enforced there is a crime greater than the mere offence in question.

Hamilton Spectator, Feb 28/12: Ten things that have changed: McHale

While to some it appears inherently wrong ever to disagree with a native person, I have to say that Ms. Bomberry’s view that nothing has changed since 2006 is not supported by the evidence. Here are10 things that have changed since 2006.

1) Contrary to the Native occupiers’ view, Six Nation Band Council has repeatedly told the court there is no claim on title to people’s property. Judges have agreed.

2) Courts have repeatedly disagreed with the OPP refusal to enforce the law and have even rebuked the OPP for targeting legal property owners instead of Native protesters.

3) The OPP has been forced to accept that property owners do have the right to have Native trespassers arrested.

Those of us who have worked to preserve the rule of law, and educate the public about the legalized myths underlying the racial policing seen in Caledonia, are pleased to see the growing media interest in the recent arrests of the Caledonia 8 and our success in finally breaching the segregated Douglas Creek Estates for the first time on Feb 18/12.  

In the eyes of talk show host Jerry Agar, who hosts on both SUN News TV and CFRB Newstalk 1010 in Toronto, innocent people with white pigment in their skin are not expendable in Caledonia, any more than any other race or culture is expendable, and the police need to stop obeying illegal orders, and honour their oaths of office to uphold the law according to the Ontario Police Services Act — even if it means telling their bosses and political masters to go to hell.

Agar went even further by effusively praising the Caledonia 8 ‘anglo white guys’ (one of our number is a very proud and strong woman named Bonnie Stephens, but I’m complaining, just being factual) and our ‘NO JEWS ALLOWED BY ORDER OF MCGUINTY’ signs (for which Gary McHale was arrested), and called for Jewish organizations and others to get involved in helping us end the racist policies that keep Jews out of the Douglas Creek Estates occupation site, just as it keeps Blacks, Whites and other races out.

A very big worm is turning in our country: it has now become ‘officially safe’ for the media and citizens to openly talk about institutionalized racism against people with white skin.

Professional photographer and graphic artist David Strutt drove from his home north of Toronto to be with members of the ‘Caledonia 8′ and our supporters on Feb 18/12 when we became the first non-natives since Feb 28/06 to walk onto the Douglas Creek Estates with United Nations and Canadian flags without asking permission from the native occupiers who terrorized Caledonia while the province’s police and Liberal government ran interference for them, and bought the site so they could remain after a judge ordered their eviction.

Only in Caledonia.

Only in Caledonia do the police let the native thugs who attack their officers and peaceful non-native people (one of whom happens to be an elderly, cancer-ridden veteran of the Canadian Navy and a UN peacekeeping mission) go free, and arrest the peaceful leader of the non-natives for standing quietly on a county road. You just can’t make this stuff up.

Today seven of the Caledonia Eight, along with a number of Caledonia residents, supporters and spouses, did what no one has done since Feb 28/06 when the occupation there began. We walked through the gates of the Douglas Creek Estates, down the county road that runs through it, to within 100 feet or so of the only house on the site.

The visit was a surprise for the occupiers and police, who were warned shortly before we left the Lions Hall in Caledonia to drive to the site.

Although history was made today by both the visit itself into Dalton McGuinty’s forbidden no-go zone via the county road that runs through the site; and by the first-ever arrest of a native person during the commission of a crime (an assault on Gary McHale), we clearly demonstrated once again that racial policing is very much alive.

The OPP arrested Gary McHale for the sixth time because a native man assaulted OPP officers and 77 year old Navy war veteran & UN peacekeeper Merlyn Kinrade who was wearing his blue beret and holding a UN flag.

Sadly, he also happens to be suffering from cancer. It happened right beside me. The police let the attacker go, and then arrested the non-native — Gary McHale — because he refused to leave because he wasn’t doing anything illegal. Why the arrest then? Because, according to the police, it was Gary McHale – one of the peaceful non-native victims of an earlier assault – who was inciting a breach of the peace.

One observer who has never attended one of our protests sent me this comment:

“I’m still trying to get it through my head that Gary was arrested in order to stop the natives from continuing to break the law. This is just ludicrous.”

We will then travel to the McGuinty/OPP racially-segregated Douglas Creek Estates and attempt — again — to walk down the county road upon which the Caledonia 8 were arrested on Dec 03/11 (charges were later dropped).

‘Courageous Caledonia 8′?

It isn’t what we’d say about ourselves, but after five plus years of full-time volunteer work fighting to preserve the rule of law and equality before it in Caledonia I have to admit that the SUN TV’s title for today’s interview with Gary McHale  did send a little chill down my spine:

Sure, seeing Jerry Agar interview Gary McHale (seen right on April 21/10 w/wife Christine on the steps of the Hamilton courthouse after a charge of Counselling Mischief Not Committed was withdrawn by the Crown) under the title ‘Courageous Caledonia 8′ was a form of vindication after such a long struggle, but the title means much more than feeding one’s vanity; it represents a milestone in that a major news service has given credibility to the story of Caledonia, and those of us who are the experts in understanding it.

SUN News has clearly decided that this story will be doggedly pursued with a gutsy determination to dig deep into the cesspool of lies and myths that keep us from resolving this without appeasing the lawless thugs who terrorized an entire county. And, there are so many of them…but first…

Those with real courage – and it’s not us…

We’ve never been comfortable when people refer to us as heroes or such. The real heroes are buried in graves all over the world, some of whom have never come home. These patriots, who dared leap off the the back of landing craft in Normandy knowing a bullet was likely to be their reward; or braved the Serbian guns in the Medak Pocket under the UN flag; or pulled their comrades out of harms way in Afghanistan under fire at great risk to their own lives…surely they must be rolling in their graves in wonderment that we have had to fight so hard and so long just to convince a corrupt police force, an even more corrupt government, and a lazy media that all people should be treated equally before the law, and that violence can never be rewarded.

MPP Toby Barrett praises McHale, CANACE for Caledonia ideas, media attention

Just days after our Queen’s Park news conference -’Ending Race-Based Policing: The Caledonia Act,’ – where we were joined by speakers from the pro-Israel Never Again Group and the International Free Press Society, MPP Toby Barrett has issued a call for strong action re the Caledonia occupation, and praised our efforts and ideas for reaching a resolution…

“Barrett credits Gary Mchale and CANACE for keeping the issue alive in the media and in the limelight, suggesting a lot of McHale’s ideas have been ‘pretty good’.” They include having more oversight from the Ontario Ombudsman with respect to the OPP and more protection for whistleblowers in the Police service.

On February 28, 2006, Dawn Smith and Janie Jamieson blocked the entrance to Douglas Creek Estates in Caledonia. Six years later, the scars of the resulting mayhem remain, continuing to seed division in the community and to block home building, commercial and industrial development.

 Thank you for the opportunity to speak today. My name is Mary Lou Ambrogio and I am VP of the Canadian chapter of the International Free Press Society, a group dedicated to preserving Free speech. Our parent organization, the Danish Free Press Society, was born out of the Danish Cartoon controversy of 2005. Rioting and deadly violence erupted when a Danish newspaper published cartoons of Mohammed in an effort to test Denmark’s tolerance for free speech. Denmark experienced a major fail but don’t believe that something is only rotten in the state of Denmark. We now have several Free Press chapters around the world and Canada does not provide an exception to the need.

In March 2010, IFPS brought Ann Coulter to Canada. The cancelled Ottawa event made international headlines when bullies chose to silence an opinion they disagreed with. They formed violent mobs to shut down Coulter’s appearance. But where were the security forces to protect her right to speak, our right to have her speak and the rights of those who wanted to hear her speak? They were observing neutrality between the lawless and the lawful, as George Jonas said at the time.

This experience found us taking a closer look at Caledonia. We realized that what happened to us was borne out of the same thinking being applied by authorities in Caledonia, where if one group wants to inhibit the rights of others, the authorities will appease the potentially violent group and simply ignore the rights of the law abiding.

Hello,

My name is Stuart Laughton and I am here on behalf of the Never Again Group, an organization that supports Gary McHale in his group’s fight against racially biased policing in Caledonia, just as he has supported us elsewhere.

The Never Again Group is based in Hamilton—which is very close to Caledonia—and our membership is about 1/2 Jewish. We defend the state of Israel from baseless accusations and we fight anti-Semitism in its various guises. The Never Again Group does not believe that the Ontario government’s directives to police in Caledonia began with ill intentions—and we don’t know anyone who believes that Premier McGuinty is specifically targeting Jews there—but these directives were nevertheless profoundly wrong and dangerous in ways Canadians are only now beginning to appreciate. I want to stress that my group has made no opposition to Natives who make land claims: we only protest the violent manner in which the claims to the Caledonia property are made and the racially skewed responses of the Ontario government.
