Little ‘Cindy’ says to her grandfather, CHML journalist Jamie West, “Grampa, what did you do during the March for Freedom?” “Nothing, sweetie, but I did watch the people go by while I was reading the sports scores.”

For a journalist who was once a gung-ho opponent of the OPP’s 2 tier justice system at play in Caledonia, Ontario, Hamilton’s CHML broadcaster, Jamie West sure has changed his tune, and one can’t help but wonder why.

On October 3rd, he posted some insulting comments calling the October 15th ‘March for Freedom’ in Caledonia a “non-sensical non-event” designed by people “from out of town to stir it up.” He went on to say that perhaps marchers could try “whooping it up…in front of the OPP Command Centre.”

I seem to recall, way back in the early days of the criminal takeover of the Douglas Creek Estates, that Jamie was in ‘no holds barred’ mode in his criticism of the OPP and our Liberal politicians. I know, because I posted several times in response to his well-written and pointed comments about two tier justice.

Since July however, he’s gone curiously silent in his blog, writing about such weighty issues as the Hamilton Tiger Cats, the Best Burger in Hamilton, and the rebirth of the Chevy Camaro, but nothing more about Caledonia – until his current post insulting the people who are coming in to stand up for the very principles he supposedly believed in 5 months ago.

I responded to Jamie’s most recent post by saying, “If ever there was a more just cause for a journalist to take up, I cannot think of what it would be. Even if you are not prepared to come out on October 15th to defend democracy, the least I would ask of you is that you stop undermining the rest of us with your insults.”

So…what happened to cause a previously outspoken advocate of law and order in Caledonia to not only abandon the fight for equal justice, but go out of his way to undermine those who ARE prepared to stand in his place while he reads the sports scores? What or who put the muzzle on Jamie West, and why? No journalist worthy of the name abandons a cause or a story without a very good reason. Was it threats from native gangsters? Political pressure? Come on, Jamie, tell us the truth.

UPDATE October 06/06: As a courtesy to Jamie West, I did email him privately on October 4th to let him know that I had posted a commentary about his silence and recent comments on the Caledonia issue. I just checked Mr. West’s blog, and was surprised to find that the post that gave rise to my comments above has been taken down. Jamie, if you did take your post down in order to not actively undermine the March for Freedom, then I both salute and thank you!

P.S. Despite the efforts of various politicians and the OPP who are trying to stop the March for Freedom, the word is getting out. I will be in Caledonia on October 15th between 1 & 4pm, and I ask you to join me and Gary McHale, the man who is putting it on the line for your right to expect fair treatment before the law.

Visit www.caledoniawakeupcall.com for march updates, and info on how you can help. You can even get a really cool T-shirt with a subscription to Gary’s new ‘password protected’ section where additional videos, photos etc. will be posted. We need you now!
