McGuinty has “confidence” in Fantino – say, what?

UPDATED 1030 EST April 19/07: CHTV News report, April 18/07 – Fantino under attack

2inch_voc_logo-url.jpgYesterday, I wrote about, how during our news conference at Queen’s Park regarding ‘FantinoGate,’ a reporter asked Gary McHale if he thought Fantino’s contact with members of the Premier’s office via his now-infamous April 07/07 email meant that the Premier was involved in influencing Fantino’s actions. McHale replied that he didn’t know, but that “it’s about as close to a smoking gun as you can get.”

mcguinty77.jpegDespite the fact that Fantino thought it necessary to share his email-based threats, intimidation and defamatory statements with the people closest to the Premier, Dalton McGuinty doesn’t seem concerned about the whiff of gunpowder in the air. Today, in a news report broadcast by CHTV (dial-up), Dalton McGuinty said:

“I continue to have confidence in him [Fantino] and in his ability to manage a very difficult situation.”

Say what?

The Premier has confidence in the OPP commissioner’s ability to conspire with town councils to discredit law-abiding citizens?

The Premier has confidence in the OPP commissioner’s ability to threaten and intimidate elected officials?

The Premier has confidence in the OPP Commissioner’s continued ability to deny policing services to the people on 6th Line in Caledonia like ‘Dancer‘ who has to take medication and go to counselling because she doesn’t feel safe in her home?

The Premier has confidence in the OPP Commissioner’s ability to stand by while his officers violate the civil rights of law-abiding citizens?

The Premier has confidence in the OPP Commissioner’s ability to slander and libel law-abiding citizens who have never committed a crime in Caledonia?

Lastly, does this mean that the Premier has confidence in the OPP commissioner’s ability to keep his office informed about any threats, intimidation and defamatory statements he’s making against elected officials and law abiding citizens? Does he have confidence in the people in his office who are being fed this information from Fantino, such as…

  1. Tony Dean (CAB) Secretary of the Cabinet
  2. Chris Morley (OPO) Office of the Premier of Ontario (press secretary)
  3. Peter Wilkinson (OPO) Chief of Staff to the Premier

I hope the Premier will forgive me for wondering if he has confidence in his Solicitor General, Monte Kwinter, to conduct fair and impartial investigations into the three complaints [1, 2, 3] against Commissioner Fantino.
