On Jan. 30, two plainclothes officers with the OPP’s Major Event Liaison Team arrived at the Thurlow Aggregates quarry on Deseronto Road and asked to speak with protest organizers.
They were told to return to the site after dark – around 8 p.m. – for a meeting with “elders”, according to police.
It is believed the officers were pushed to the ground, pelted with snow and their vehicle was damaged by those at the scene. Neither officer, however, was reported to have been injured.
Feeding the crocodiles in Deseronto
Readers will recall that the Belleville Intelligencer once ran an editorial applauding Deseronto town council and the Royal Canadian Legion for refusing to rent rooms to us so that we and Caledonia citizens could inform people there about the realities of Two Tier Justice, and the steps we were taking to peacefully oppose it.
The piece, published June 07/07, was called, ‘No room for inflammatory rhetoric‘ and included a quote from Deseronto Mayor Clarence Zieman: “From what I understand, the meeting would have been to berate what they call a two-tier system of policing. We’re quite happy with what the OPP are doing.”
In what surely must be the ultimate example of journalistic irony, the same edition of the Intelligencer carried a story about how an OPP officer was attacked by two Mohawks pretending to be motorists stranded on the side of the road. They didn’t have any editorial comment on that story.
Now, more police officers have been attacked at the illegal quarry occupation. No response from the OPP. No removal of the cowardly thugs. No arrests. Nothing.
To the ‘leaders’ of Deseronto, I have three questions:
1. Do you think that remaining silent and uninformed in the face of native lawlessness and OPP inaction will encourage the extremists to be more violent or less violent?
2. If the OPP will not even protect their own officers, what makes you think they will protect you? (In Caledonia on Dec 01/07, numerous officers were assaulted, yet a detective testified that none of them complained. We are now laying charges on their behalf via private prosecutions. If the OPP won’t protect their officers, we will.)
3. Now that the National Post, Toronto Sun, Conservative leader John Tory and MPP Toby Barrett have adopted the identical positions that we have advocated during the last 18 months, would you refuse to rent a room to them as you did us?
