London Free Press & Rory Leishman part company over Islamic extremism article

Former London Free Press columnist Rory LeishmanColumnist Rory Leishman and the London Free Press (Ontario, Canada) have parted company over a column exposing the willingness of community leaders to tolerate and even embrace those who express support for radical Islam.

Since I live in London – which has a large population of Muslims – and have exchanged a few emails with him regarding Caledonia Leishman’s departure hits close to home.

Media ignores Islamist extremism

by Rory Leishman

[Note: The following column was scheduled to appear in The London Free Press on September 11, but was rejected for publication by the newspaper’s Managing Editor Joe Ruscitti.]

Following the arrest of three more Canadian citizens on terrorism charges last month, Public Safety Minister Vic Toews warned: “We are not immune from international or home-grown radicalization. I have said this before: The threat is real and we cannot be complacent.”

Consider the evidence: The great majority of suspected terrorists arrested in Canada in recent years were either born and raised in Canada, or had spent most of their formative years in this country. And the same is true of all 11 of the Toronto 18 suspects who were convicted of conspiring to storm Parliament Hill and set off a series of devastating truck bombs in downtown Toronto.

That’s not all. An Environics poll conducted three years ago found that 10 per cent of a representative national sample of Canadian Muslims admitted to feeling that members of the Toronto 18 were completely or somewhat justified to plan their attacks. How can that be? How could tens of thousands of Muslims living in Canada sympathize with Islamist terrorists who were plotting the greatest mass slaughter of civilians in Canadian history?

Part of the answer can be found in some mainstream Muslim publications in Canada. For example, in July, Al Bilad, a monthly newspaper published in Arabic and English in London, Ontario, featured a poem that glorifies an Islamist homicide bomber who pleads to her mother:

“Yumma, tell my son that I did not abandon him, never!

I did it for his freedom and our peoples (sic) right to be able to live free, forever!

Yumma, tell my husband that he will always be my all,

I know he understands and he knows why I took that call.”

Following the publication of this ode to terrorism in Al Bilad, all Canadians alert to the peril of home-grown radicalization should surely boycott the newspaper. Yet the current issue includes advertisements for Jack Layton, leader of the New Democratic Party; Irene Mathyssen, NDP MP for London–Fanshawe; Khalil Ramal, Liberal MPP for London-Fanshawe; Jim Chahbar, Conservative candidate for London–Fanshawe; and Ed Holder, Conservative MP for London-West. VoC Comment

I’ve read both sides on this and, while I’m all for responsible journalism (God knows we suffered from a serious lack thereof in Caledonia!) I think Leishman’s reasoning holds water.

It may be helpful to know that London has a fairly large Muslim population – 11,460 out of 332,940 (3%). By comparison, for example, there are only about 1,825 Jews who call London home.  What part this plays (ed) in the tolerance of jihadist thought by so-called community leaders and the LFP’s editor, I don’t know. I do know that I will miss Rory’s column.   He was a breath of fresh air in a politically-correct world.

Note that Rory mentions the Muslim Brotherhood and the Muslim Association of Canada in his column. I expose evidence against both these groups here:

Updates

  • TheVoiceofLondon.ca, Herman Goodden, Oct 01/10: Welcome to the Big Chair, Joe RuscittiAnd so there it goes. Rory Leishman quits his column in the Free Press and subsequently lands the largest national readership he’s ever known. Joe Ruscitti lands in the big editorial chair, gets tagged by a national paper as a scaredy-cat and finds out in spades just what an explosive business journalism can be. And London media loses one of its steadiest local voices. A damn shame all around, I call it.”

  1. I totally agree with Rory and Kudos for reporting this !! We have seen the rise of honor killings and home grown terrorism here. Even Muslims are warning us of extremists and sharia law. They came here to get away from extremists and we must be vigilant. It was moderate Muslims who spoke out against an attempt invoke sharia law here just a short time ago. We have to embrace other cultures while safe guarding our freedom.

I spend a lot of time posting against extremists and their assault on the Jewish community and in particular the Gaza situation. The hatred is palpable and irrational. They hate us as well and Americans.

Rory is warning us and was very straight forward. Omar Kadar is an example. Born and raised here and willing to kill us and US soldiers. His father and one brother died fighting for the Tailban in Afghanistan. Another brother was released from jail for terrorist activity and Omar was seen killing a US soldier. The mother and sister openly praise them for their terrorist activities.
We have to be aware of the realities of the extremist dangers her in our country !!

VoC REPLY: Thanks for the thoughts, Tom. Islamic extremism poses a grave danger to democracies everywhere. I just read a story about some Brits who were arrested for burning a Koran shortly after the entire United States government cowered before the threats of violence by refusing to defend the Florida pastor’s right to burn one. Regards, Mark

  2. I was a Law student in London UK and I saw the proliferation of Islamics in the UK.
What really bothers me is the failure of the IN to recognize it’s bias against Israel in the Gaza conflict. Ki-Moon did make a statement a couple years ago recognizing this bias in their Humanitarian Council but have failed to condemn the recent fact finding report. The language of that report is extremely biased and fails to recognize San Remo Manual 1994 as the applicable law , Instead it references Maritime law which deals with individual actions and not state actions.
    Tom

  3. San Remo Manual 1994

“67. Merchant vessels flying the flag of neutral States may not be attacked unless they:

    (a) are believed on reasonable grounds to be carrying contraband or breaching a blockade, and after prior warning they intentionally and clearly refuse to stop, or intentionally and clearly resist visit, search or capture; ”

Israel acted and quotes SRM to justify what they did and they are correct. Mussies are quoting Maritime law which is a totally different body f law.

  4. Note that a vessel was just boarded in International waters by Israel. The vessel followed orders and was diverted to Ashod. Aid will be delivered over land and no one was injured.
The difference is that there were no militants spoiling for a media event and they obeyed the Israelis warnings. 9 activists died for nothing except martyrdom and a few months of media attention!!!
