Queens Park –MPP Toby Barrett is asking Dalton McGuinty for help to deal with the ongoing impact and unanswered questions from the four-and-a-half year old land dispute in Caledonia.

“On behalf of people in Haldimand–Norfolk and Caledonia and, if I may, Brantford as well, I rise today to ask Premier McGuinty for help. It has come to this. It has been four and a half years. We need help,” Barrett implored during the latest Caledonia debate at Queens Park.

  1. Erroneously, Toby Barrett is labelled as leading this latest charge for an inquiry into the Caledonia debacle. See quote from above by VoC: “Dalton McGuinty and the ruling Ontario Liberals have voted down yet another demand for an inquiry into Caledonia led by Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Toby Barrett.”

The request for inquiry came from MPP Chudleigh.

Is an inquiry required? The salt of my being tells me “yes”. Will it come unabashed by any government party who should lead for the truth of the matter? My knowledge tells me “no”.

It will serve only those who would wordsmith the crap out of ever “if”, “and” or “but”.

Again, I am reminded of a quote from Albert Einstein: “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

VoC REPLY: You are correct re Chudleigh doing the presentation which is correct because he is the critic for justice, but Toby also called for help for Caledonia during the debate, he is the critic for aboriginal affairs, he is the author of the private member’s bill, and he is the MPP for the area affected, so I think it’s fair to say he’s leading the charge on the inquiry call with the help of other PCs.

Blatchford’s book will provide a damning account of misconduct in Caledonia/Haldimand, but it can only go so far. We do definitely need an inquiry. The only question is will the PCs have the intestinal fortitude to create an inquiry that includes examining the conduct of the OPP, or will it be a political inquiry into the government. I will certainly do my best to make sure it’s the former.

    Thanks for writing Popeye. Mark

  2. Thanks for letting me sail my thoughts Mark.

As a side note, is Toby Barrett the Critic for Aboriginal Affairs as you state? His website states that he is opposition critic for the Environment.

    Please review the following link.

VoC REPLY: Thanks for pointing out my error; not sure how I got that one wrong, thought I’d read it somewhere. The Ontario Legislature’s website shows Ted Arnott (Wellington-Halton Hills) as the PC’s Aboriginal Affairs critic. Never heard of him. Thanks for the good catch, Popeye. Mark
