Freedom Party of Ontario bestows ‘Free Speech Award’ on Mary Lou Ambrogio; praises Caledonia activists

The week beginning Saturday, April 21, 2012 was surely one of curious contrasts for Caledonia rule-of-law activists…

In the evening, I was honoured to be a guest speaker and presenter at the post-election dinner meeting for the Freedom Party of Ontario where executive members Bob Metz, Robert Vaughan, and leader Paul McKeever explained why the NDP, Liberals and Hudak PCs are all nearly-identical ‘red’ parties more interested in promoting ‘wealth distribution’ than in promoting wealth creation and protecting liberty.

On the way home my very apolitical wife said, ‘The penny dropped after listening to the speeches. Now I understand the difference between the parties.’

McHale arrested in Caledonia because Native man assaults 77 yr old former Navy vet/UN peacekeeper & OPP officers

LAST UPDATED Feb 28/12

Only in Caledonia.

VoiceofCanada, Feb 06/12: David Strutt cartoon: new logo for ‘ONTARIO PARTISAN POLICE’Only in Caledonia do the police let the native thugs who attack their officers and peaceful non-native people (one of whom happens to be an elderly, cancer-ridden veteran of the Canadian Navy and a UN peacekeeping mission) go free, and arrest the peaceful leader of the non-natives for standing quietly on a county road. You just can’t make this stuff up.

Today seven of the Caledonia Eight, along with a number of Caledonia residents, supporters and spouses, did what no one has done since Feb 28/06 when the occupation there began. We walked through the gates of the Douglas Creek Estates, down the county road that runs through it, to within 100 feet or so of the only house on the site.

The visit was a surprise for the occupiers and police, who were warned shortly before we left the Lions Hall in Caledonia to drive to the site.

120218 History made as OPP arrest native on DCE; 1st arrest ever during commission of crime. PHOTO BY CHRISTINE MCHALEAlthough history was made today by both the visit itself into Dalton McGuinty’s forbidden no-go zone via the county road that runs through the site; and by the first-ever arrest of a native person during the commission of a crime (an assault on Gary McHale), we clearly demonstrated once again that racial policing is very much alive.

The OPP arrested Gary McHale for the sixth time because a native man assaulted OPP officers and 77 year old Navy war veteran & UN peacekeeper Merlyn Kinrade who was wearing his blue beret and holding a UN flag.

Sadly, he also happens to be suffering from cancer. It happened right beside me. The police let the attacker go, and then arrested the non-native — Gary McHale — because he refused to leave because he wasn’t doing anything illegal. Why the arrest then? Because, according to the police, it was Gary McHale – one of the 120218 OPP ask Caledonia 8 to leave DCE even though things are quiet after arrest of native woman. Caledonia 8 members (L-R): Mark Vandermaas (blue beret), Gary McHale, Merlyn Kinrade (holding UN flag)peaceful non-native victims of an earlier assault – who was inciting a breach of the peace.

One observer who has never attended one of our protests sent me this comment:

“I’m still trying to get it through my head that Gary was arrested in order to stop the natives from continuing to break the law. This is just ludicrous.” Continue reading

UPDATED March 07/11 — after returning home yesterday from Sunday’s tumultuous Truth and Reconciliation Rally on Feb 27/11, and our unsuccessful attempt to place a symbolic Healing & Reconciliation Apology monument on the road allowance near the entrance to the occupation site in Caledonia, I forwarded some initial thoughts and references to Natasha at MooseAndSquirrel.ca who has been kind enough to not only cover this story, but also share my speech notes with her readers since I have not had time to do so.

'6N' (SIX NATIONS) APOLOGY - Truth & Reconciliation monument I apologize to other bloggers like Celestial Junk, Gods of the Copybook Headings, Blazing Cat Fur who have covered the Caledonia story for not being included, but I was completely overwhelmed with the preparations for the event, and had only intended to leave a short comment to some of Natasha’s stories which led to a very hurried idea to just send copies of my speech notes & photos of the monument I had just taken to her. Your exclusion was not intentional, and I promise to try to do better.  Thanks also to Xanthippa for coverage of Caledonia and our March 22nd presentation in Ottawa. 🙂

Natasha’s story based on my rally notes has sparked a great debate in which Dan Kellar (yes, that one) weighed in to help all of us understand that the anarchist/anti-capitalist support for the occupation is based on dogma and not reality:

BULLETIN: MPPs Barrett & Hillier to join CANACE, Caledonia Victims Project at Queen’s Park news conference

MPP Randy HillierMPP Toby BarrettCo-founders of Canadian Advocates for Charter Equality (CANACE) Gary McHale and Caledonia resident Merlyn Kinrade, and Caledonia Victims Project founder Mark Vandermaas will be joined by Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Toby Barrett and fellow MPP Randy Hillier (Lanark-Frontenac-Lennox) at a news conference in the Queen’s Park Media Studio tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 pm.

The purpose of the event is to provide journalists with information about our upcoming ‘Truth and Reconciliation Rally’ which will be held this coming Sunday, Feb 27th at 1pm. (link to news release below)

We are very pleased that Mr. Barrett and Mr. Hillier have agreed to participate in this news conference to show their support in furthering the cause of healing for Caledonia and Six Nations residents.

MPP Toby Barrett – there from the beginning

march_for_freedom_oct15-06-011.jpgmarch_for_freedom_oct15-06-008.jpgMr. Barrett was one of the original speakers at Gary McHale’s inaugural March for Freedom on Oct 15/06, and so it is very fitting that he should take part in announcing this, the next stage towards resolution now that Christie Blatchford has finally recorded the ugly, undeniable history of Caledonia’s victims: the encouragement of those responsible to apologize so both Caledonia and Six Nations can begin a meaningful healing and reconciliation process that is based on truth, justice and respect for all human beings.

His devastatingly concise ‘Haldimand Proclamation for Peace, Order and Good Government‘ of February 11, 2008 surely must rank as one of the most shocking and historically-important documents ever written by a Canadian politician:

Barrett has previously made the Media Studio available to us on three other important occasions:

  • Dec 04/07: Illegal Smokeshacks (Doug Fleming’s campaign vs. Illegal smokes and violence by 6N vs. non-natives, Dec 01/07)
  • March 14/07: The Ipperwash Papers (release of 400 pages of docs proving Inquiry did not study violence vs. Ipperwash residents)
  • April 17/07: FantinoGate (OPP Commissioner Julian Fantino threatens Haldimand Council via email)

PC Leader Tim Hudak – a voice of reason when it counted

We should also note that, at a time when Ontario government ministers, including the Premier, were urging people not to march with Gary McHale in 2006 because they would be putting their lives “in danger,” current PC Leader Tim Hudak was the only voice of reason:

“…Conservative Tim Hudak said the government is ignoring the situation and needs to end the ongoing occupation. The rally shows town residents have had enough, he said. “People are not only angry, they’re damn angry,” Hudak said. “It’s an incredible double standard. On the one hand, the premier is against this rally but it’s carte blanche for the occupiers on the occupied site.” The province shouldn’t continue negotiating with Six Nations as long as the protesters remain on the site, Hudak said. “There is no reason for that occupation to continue,” he said.

2010 ‘New Directions in Aboriginal Policy’ forum hears Caledonia’s pain

UPDATED May 12/10 — 2010 New Directions in Aboriginal Policy forum, Mount Royal University, Calgary, May 05/10: (L-R) Mark Vandermaas (Caledonia Victims Project); Gary McHale (Canadian Advocates for Charter Equality); Ron Bourgeault (University of Regina); Dr. Miriam Carey (Chair, Panel II); Wes Elliott (Six Nations, not visible)Gary McHale and I have returned from Calgary. The ‘New Directions in Aboriginal Policy’ forum at Mount Royal University was a fabulous success at many levels thanks to great speakers, important networking, the fact that Caledonia’s voice was heard loudly and clearly, and especially because the university stood firm against those trying to infringe on academic freedom.

Campaign against Vandermaas & McHale produces positive outcome

A storm of controversy that was ignited by an internet  petition aimed at intimidating Mount Royal University into revoking the invitation to speak has now, unexpectedly, brought about some very positive results for the people of Caledonia and Six Nations, and the future of debate in Canada:

1. The petition was voluntarily taken down by the Australian host due to libelous statements against Mark Vandermaas & Gary McHale.

2. Christie Blatchford was drawn into the firestorm when a Mount Royal professor announced he planned to sign the petition, and then suggested that she be invited to speak instead Vandermaas & McHale.

Blatchford sent forum organizer Dr. Widdowson a lengthy email explaining that she was too busy to come because she was writing a book about Caledonia, and that the allegations against the two – based on her personal knowledge – were untrue.

Caledonia breakthrough: Canadians allowed to walk past DCE with Canadian flags

opp_000682UPDATED 1126 EST June 23/09: Video footage of marchers put to music courtesy of Jeff Parkinson.

I am very pleased to report that I sent the following letter to the OPP on behalf of CANACE to thank them for their role in yesterday’s ‘Support Randy Fleming‘ rally.

——————————————————-

June 21, 2009

Commissioner Fantino, Ontario Provincial Police
Superintendent Gentle
Inspector McLean
Sergeant Carter
Sergeant Michaud

Dear Gentlemen:

Gary McHale and Merlyn Kinrade asked if I would pass on thanks from CANACE to you and your officers for your assistance, your honest communications and your decision to protect and respect the rights of non-natives to walk down Argyle Street with Canadian flags past the DCE. I know this was a big step for the OPP and I know that Sgt. Carter could not have helped make it happen without the support of the OPP leadership. For this we are truly grateful to you all.

Before leaving Lions Park I told the crowd that the officers of the OPP have had a rough three years, too and that no matter what has happened in the past, or will happen in the future, today they made the decision to do the right thing for us. I asked them to thank every OPP officer they met that day in the hopes your officers would go home to their families to tell them that perhaps life will be getting better for them, too.
